The Charleston Gazette-Mail, West Virginia’s largest newspaper, featured co-owners Dee and Angie Cowger in a story Aug. 19 about Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili’s expansion into new markets and gave a taste of its history.
Here are a few excerpts from Marcus Constantio’s article for the Gazette-Mail:
“We started out on the top of our stove, and we would make two 30-pound pot fulls for our restaurants,” Dee Cowger said. “Now, we can manufacture 5,000 pounds a day, but we do about 3,300 or 3,400 pounds a day. We make a lot of chili.”
Custard Stand Chili can now be found at Kroger, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores throughout the region. Angie said Custard Stand is working with Costco to get the chili placed in Virginia-area stores, and a recently-made distribution agreement will bring Custard Stand Chili to various stores in the Chicagoland area.
A few days later, our pal, Terry Sullivan, sent Angie an email with a photo of USA Today’s State-By-State news round-up. The featured item for West Virginia was from the Gazette-Mail article.
